Health Action New MexicoHealth Action New Mexico (HANM) is a small non-profit dedicated to achieving affordable, accessible, accountable health care for all New Mexicans. We believe that access to health care is a fundamental right and that the 44 million uninsured Americans and the 410,000 uninsured New Mexicans who are denied this access are, in fact, denied basic a basic human right. Based in Albuquerque, Health Action was founded in 1995 by a network of concerned health advocates, consumers, community members, and health care providers. As a grassroots organization, we work in coalition with other organizations and with our community to strive toward the ultimate goal of bringing universal health care to New Mexico, a state which ranks among the top three poorest states in the country and which has the second highest number of uninsured people in the nation. We are currently kicking off a strategic, community-based campaign to achieve health care for all New Mexicans by the year 2009. This campaign encompasses grass roots organizing, media and messaging efforts, and a push for political solutions. Other important projects we are involved with include the Tax Reform Coalition, the Community Coalition for Health Care Access and the Medicaid Coalition. These meetings are open to the public and often feature informative presentations on health care issues by various experts and activists.
