The 3rd Americas Social Forum (ASF) will be October 7-12 in Guatemala City. Amongst many topics to discuss and work on will be the femicides perpetrated against mostly working-class young women, not only in Mexico but in Guatemala as well. For years, the Peace Center has supported the relatives of victims in Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua, Mexico:
The Peace Center raised the topic in our community and has worked with Amnesty International and Mexico Solidarity Network to bring the International Caravan for Justice to Albuquerque. We have worked with students at the RFK Charter School and Highland High School, put together the Justicia para Nuestras Hijas panel discussion in collaboration with UNM's Women's Resource Center, Solas and the Art of the Americas Institute. Throughout the years we have also promoted calls to NM representatives in support of bills, resolutions and memorials in solidarity with the mothers of the victims, shown films and opened dialogue with our neighbors from the south. With your help, we have raised money that has been contributed to grassroots Juárez-based organizations and to Fundación Sobrevivientes ( www.sobrevivientes.org ) in Guatemala City. We are proud that Cecilia Chávez, our co-coordinator, will be part of a panel discussion at the Americas Social Forum, representing the Peace Center, networking and strategizing for the future. Cecilia is grateful for the opportunity to participate and connect with international groups that have similar goals. The Peace Center invites you to contribute/help cover part of the expenses. (Cecilia is very frugal and will make the best of your contribution - she figures $900 will cover transportation, food and housing altogether.) There will be a report in mid-November. Additionally, we would like to raise enough money to take to Fundación Sobrevivientes (FS) to support its work addressing domestic violence, family education and women's rights. Please earmark whether you prefer your $$ to go to FS or to cover our Peace Center representative's expenses. | ||||||||
