[Council & Committee Announcements]

For all Zapatista supporters, we have delicious Zapatista coffee available at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice. We are asking for a donation of $10 for a half-kilo bag, whole bean only. This coffee was hand carried from Chiapas and donations will go to fund Zapatista community based efforts. Dear members, for years the Peace Center's membership fee has remained the same. Starting in January, 2008, the basic individual/family fee will go up to $36 per year.

LESS THAN 10 CENTS A DAY FOR PEACE!

Frontera NorteSur has a 15-year history of providing steady, reliable news coverage about the Mexico-US border. FNS combines summaries from the Mexican press with original reporting and analysis that never finds its way into the traditional US media. FNS is dependent on contributions from readers. Please consider making a generous tax-deductible contribution to help Frontera NorteSur survive. Info: Neil Harvey at nharvey@nmsu.edu . You can donate by sending a check to: NMSU Advancement, Attn: Rebecca Dukes, Vice President for University Advancement, Box 3590 Las Cruces, NM 88003.

The Media Education Foundation (MEF) announced today that 5,000 DVDs of the acclaimed documentary Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People are available to highschool educators at $10 and to professors of journalism at $50 due to a generous donation to MEF. MEF urges the use of the film in curricula focused on multiculturalism and ethnic bias. Reel Bad Arabs explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs and offers devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images and why they matter so much today. A free downloadable study guide is available at www.mediaed.org and is designed for use in high school civics and social studies classes, as well as in university journalism and communication classes. Teachers: Call 1-800-897-0089 or fax order to 413-586-8398. High schools, please mention code 2RBA7. Journalism and Communication departments, please mention code 8RBA7.

Available Media filed![Microphone] Five applications for full power licenses were submitted to the FCC on Thursday, October 18 -- just hours before the FCC's server crashed due to such a large volume of applications. If there is competition for a particular frequency or a problem with our application, it could take months before we know anything. We'll keep you posted. Available Media thanks everyone who supported this monumentous effort - we raised almost $10,000 in less than two months to hire the engineers and lawyers. Info: 247-9694, mjs1126@hotmail.com .

A committee has formed to create a New Mexico GI Rights Hotline and to provide information to members of the military about discharges, grievance and complaint procedures, etc. If you are looking for a way to really "support our troops," call 247-9694.

Growing organic food leads to peace.
[Assorted Organic Food]Growing our own toxin-free food reduces oil consumed in transporting food from producers to stores and from stores to you. Reduction of oil use reduces the fighting over oil and leads to peace. Reducing toxins in our bodies gives us greater health and a more peaceful frame of mind. Coordinating what we grow with neighbors, and then trading, creates cooperative networks and leads to peace. Selling your produce locally provides some income, enlarges your network, and leads to peace. If you're interested in developing an organic backyard garden network, call Anna at 366-8936 to share info.

For the last one and a half years, a small group of people have pledged $10.00 per month to be used for staff health needs. We would like to expand the group and build up the account. To contribute, call Suzanne at 268-9557 and leave a message. Thanks.

Iraq Moratorium: On the third Friday of each month, millions of Americans will break with their daily routine to demand an end to the war and the return home of the troops. Wear black ribbons and armbands, in mourning for all of those who have died in this senseless adventure. Together, acting where we live, work and study, we will create a mighty shout so loud that the media won't be able to white it out and the politicians won't be able to ignore it. Info: iraqmoratorium.org .

Tax Protest 2008: A new campaign began last spring to get 10,000 war protestors in the US to refuse some of their income tax in April 2008. It is sponsored by Veterans for Peace, NWTRCC and others. Coordinators in NM are Marcus Page, (379-6942) local contact for NWTRCC, and Aanya Adler Friess (247-2788). Sign up forms and flyers are at the Peace Center and through other organizations. It would be great if 500 New Mexicans joined this protest.
