So far this year, over 200 people have died trying to cross the desert from Mexico into the US. Regardless of your views on immigration, the fact remains that families are splintering and risking their lives to flee economic crisis south of our border. Small amounts of material aid can reduce the risk of death for the men, women, and children who attempt this dangerous journey. In conjunction with No More Deaths, a non-profit committed to preventing migrant death on the Arizona/Mexico border, schoolteacher and volunteer repatriation worker Allegra Love has organized a drive to gather: Socks; Sneakers; Basic medical supplies (aspirin, antibiotic ointment, bandages, butterfly bandages, gauze, tape); Rice, beans, granola bars, electrolyte-balancing sports drink powder; Gift cards (aid workers will use for needed supplies); Phonecards; Money. These supplies and any financial aid will help reduce the likelihood that the assault on these people's dignity does not extend to them dying to get into our country. Please send checks to: Allegra Love, PO Box 2643, Santa Fe, NM 87504. In Albuquerque, your donation can be left at the Peace Center. To get involved on a larger scale email Allegra Love at legslove@gmail.com . SAGE Council continues to support the efforts of the Dooda Desert Rock organization, which was formed to prevent the construction of a 1,500-mega watt coal-fired power plant on the Navajo reservation. This would be the third power plant on the reservation and would add to the already extremely harmful health and environmental impacts caused by the pollution. On October 5th-7th, SAGE Council will take a group from Albuquerque to assist the Dooda Desert Rock organization in gathering signatures from people in opposition to the power plant. The signatures collected will then be presented to the Navajo Nation Council. Help make signs or banners. Make a donation to SAGE Council ( sagecouncil.org ); money will go to help finance the trip to Shiprock, and to buy supplies for the resistance camp. Info: SAGE Council, 260-4696, or desert-rock-blog.com . We lost our dear friend, Mary Ann Fiske on September 19 after a long struggle with cancer. She and her husband, Chuck Hosking, were a great peace team, Chuck demonstrating at Kirtland Base weekly and Mary Ann the master organizer. 500 High St. was the center for a number of organizations. Mary Ann was still working on the Ethics Brigade a few days before her death. With it she wanted to bring real ethics reform to city government. Mary Ann and Chuck have been bastions of simple living, warmth and caring, and peace activism in Albuquerque for some 20 years. Farewell dear Mary Ann, you leave a big empty space!
