Letter from our new co-coordinator

Dear Peace and Justice Community,

I am honored to be working at the Center for Peace and Justice and hope that my presence will add to the eclectic and vibrant energy of the organization. I am impressed by P & J's commitment to visible, peaceful, and conscientious alternatives to mainstream culture.

I first came to Albuquerque 4 years ago in pursuit of an MFA in Painting and Drawing, and continue to take classes informally at the University of New Mexico in the graduate dance department. The arts have always provided me with a way to express the internal workings of my spirit and process the world around me.

Community-building and open dialogue between diverse groups of people is a priority in my life. About ten years ago, I traveled through Northern and Western Africa, and lived in a coastal country called Senegal. I became fascinated with the rich sense of community that I observed in the villages of Southern Senegal, and have developed a deep love for this place and its peoples. I have traveled back to Senegal every year since then, and lead cultural tours and dance workshops to Senegal with my husband a native Senegalese (check out www.casadimanza.com for more information). This opportunity has enriched my life by showing me the power of cultural exchanges. Watching North Americans experience a rural village in West Africa, and seeing individuals (from both cultures) open their minds and their hearts to a different way of life, has shaped me significantly. Through my travels, I have also been able to see how different parts of the world view the United States, which is valuable information when trying to bring about change.

Since my arrival in New Mexico, I have been active in other non-profits, including the National Institute of Flamenco and Ballet Kouyate, and have worked on building community and cultural awareness through the arts.

I am thankful to be the new co-coordinator at the Center for Peace and Justice and look forward to working with all of you! The position is 20 hrs a week, and my responsibilities include Grassroots NM, People before Profit film and lecture series, grant research and proposals, PAJOLA, as well as general building concerns.

Toujours dans la paix,

Mary Laniel Nakigan

STAND DOWN At Kirtland AFB

Saturday, Sep. 15, 2007
11 am 1 pm Gibson Blvd. at Truman Street

When the U.S. started loosing the ground war in Vietnam a massive, air-war bombing campaign was launched against the civilian population. This is also the new plan for Iraq: reduce ground troop casualties and use more air power.

Again, the number of women and children being killed is large. It is estimated that a million people have been killed in Iraq alone.

This time the air war is not just being conducted by jets like the F-16 at Kirtland but also by new pilotless war planes (which were developed here too). We are rallying to call on local pilots and personnel to STAND DOWN from this criminal war.
