The Art Project

The Art Project at the Peace Center will feature the pastels of Patti Gladstone during July and August. A reception will be held the weekend of July 20. Call 505-268-9557 for specifics.

An eclectic experimental artist, Patti began bringing her many prior years of performing arts experience onto her workbench and easel more than two decades ago. After relocating from the northeast to the southwest, her earler work in glass and oils morphed into pastels, inspired first by the array of landscape forms, colors and shadows so plentiful here. Unlike many pastel artists whose work seldom moves beyond the landscapes natural to their medium, Patti has gravitated into night scenes, still lifes, animal and human portraits and other subject matter for which pastels also offer unique attributes.

A devoted and doting grandmother of seven, she permits neither her filial functions nor her "day job" to interfere with her art, and vice-versa.

Outreach Committee Report

Outreach is a newly formed committee of the P&J and we want to hit the ground running with some great ideas for action. Get involved! This committee is strategizing to find more opportunities for the P&J Center to share our work and our message with the larger community, including all grade levels in our schools. What ideas do you have? Please join us for our next meeting and mini training on bringing the P&J message to our community, Monday, July 23, 6-8pm at the P&J Center. Call us for more info.

People before Profit is on summer hiatus.

Well the Elevator 9 Trial has been moved yet again and is now scheduled for Thursday September 6th at 9am at 421 Gold SW 6th floor courtroom in Albuquerque. The Prosecutor is the reason for the latest in a long series of delays; he had to be in California for his parent's 50th wedding anniversary. Also, some of the witnesses would be gone for July and August, which gets us all the way to September 6th, almost one year since September 26, 2006, when the 9 tried to get Senator Domenici to sign the Declaration of Peace ( see declarationofpeace.org ). and wound up spending over five hours in an elevator reading the names of both the American and Iraqi dead before they were cited. Their current lawyers have sent a subpoena to Senator Domenici for him to come testify at the trial and they are still waiting on Judge Svett's ruling. Questions? bud@siochainworld.org .

The Declaration of Peace ( declarationofpeace.org ) is gearing up again to confront Congress over this evil, illegal, immoral war in Iraq. You are urged to go to the website and download the 2007 Congressional Declaration of Peace. Send it with a letter from you and/or your group to Senators Domenici & Bingaman, and also to Udall, Wilson & Pearce, calling on them to sign the Declaration. Then on Friday September 21st - International Day of Peace - join thousands of our fellow citizens from around the country and go to your local representative's office for a demonstration and possible sit-in.

From silent vigils to jet-lagged travelers recently returned from Israel and Palestine, what did we learn from our week of End the Israeli Occupation activities?
  • 1) It felt good to connect with international demonstrations and to know that we had helped to pay for ads against the occupation in the Washington, DC subway system.
  • 2) We were able to work cooperatively with four other women's groups.
  • 3) The counter-demonstration against Women in Black led to a positive internal dialogue and a reaffirmation of commitment to non-violence and a silent, sign-less witness for peace.
  • 4) Santa Feans came to ABQ to hear Iris and Rita's first hand impressions of their trip, and Albuquerqueans went to the City Different vigil. Each activity had its own flavor, but it felt like a web is being spun of activists who are willing to go the extra mile (60 miles or 6000) in a variety of venues to continue the work of ending the 40 year/60 year occupation.
