Sunday, June 10, 6pm at the Peace Center Speakers: Elizabeth Cook, New Orleans, is an organizer with C3/HANDS off IBERVILLE!, a collective of anti-war and community activists, public housing residents who exposed collaboration between developers and a prominent New Orleans City Councilperson. She will speak on the continuing project, including the effort to reopen Charity Hospital which has been shut down since Katrina. Tilda Sosaya, New Mexico, is a long-time NM prisoner rights activist, and a member of the steering committee of a nation-wide coalition, called NO-CHILD-LEFT-BEHIND-BARS! This group emerged in Taylor, Texas, when local residents discovered that more than 200 young children and their mothers were confined in the T. Don Hutto Family Center, a former prison owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). Hutto is nothing less than a concentration camp run by the largest private prison company in the US. The residents are primarily families from many nations who sought freedom and asylum in the US. They have been rounded up in the Homeland Security/ICE's (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) determination to detain and deport immigrants. Children as young as three are housed in prison cells, often separated from their mothers, permitted no toys, and have minimal education, dental and medical care. Our goal is to get them out of these prison/concentration camps. | ||||||||
