Palestinian Human Rights Advocate to speak on Israeli Occupation of West Bank

Saturday, Nov. 18, 6:30pm, Palestinian human rights activist Iyad Burnat offers a lecture, “Palestinian Rights: Bil'in and the Non-Violent Resistance” at Congregation Nahalat Shalom, 3606 Rio Grande Blvd NW.

Burnat is the founder and head of the Bil’in Popular Committee Against the Wall, a citizen’s group formed in 2004 to deal with regular raids by the Israeli forces. It seeks to slow down the theft of Bil’in’s olive trees and the confiscation of farmland. The group has led weekly demonstrations since 2005 against the Separation Barrier Israel built on Occupied Palestinian land. He is also head of Friends of Freedom and Justice in Bil’in, a pro-Palestinian organization with the stated aims of building a “wide network of people from all over the globe who support Freedom and Justice for all.”

Bil’in’s fight for survival was documented by Iyad’s brother, Emad Burnat, in the Oscar-nominated documentary, 5 Broken Cameras. First and foremost, Iyad Burnat has been a leading proponent of a non-violent peace protest against the Separation Wall. Resistance has cost Iyad years in jail, the loss of friends murdered by the Israeli military, and injury to his children by the occupying soldiers. Under his skillful eye, Emad captured the images of occupation, and documented the ensuing violence meted out to the protesters, young and old. Iyad was the recipient of the James Lawson Award for Achievement in the Practice of Nonviolent Conflict 2015.

Iyad will be selling his recently-published book, Bil’in and the Non-Violent Resistance. This event is open to the public. A suggested cash donation of $10 will be most appreciated; no one will be turned away.  Sponsor: Jewish Voice for Peace – Albuquerque. Contact:  Alan Wagman, (575) 590-7942.
