Trick-or-Treat-for-UNICEF Party

Raise Money for Refugee Children and Celebrate UN Day!

The Albuquerque Chapter of the United Nations Association will host a Trick-or-Treat-for-UNICEF party on Saturday, Oct. 28, 3-5pm at the Peace Center.

Students, community members, families and kids of all ages are invited to come in  costume, enjoy some snacks, cider, costume parades, games, contests and Halloween fun. There is no charge for admission. However, guests are asked to contribute what you can to the big Trick-or-Treat-for-UNICEF jar at the center of the party (donations from $5-25 or more per attendee will be greatly appreciated).

There will also be game tickets for sale (6 for $1) so that children can play games, win prizes and make their own contributions to UNICEF’s programs to help children. All donations and funds raised will go to UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, to help refugee children around the world. There has never been a more critical time to support UNICEF’s work with refugee children.

The UN Refugee Agency's annual Global Trends study found that 65.6 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide at the end of 2016 – larger than the population of the United Kingdom and about 300,000 more than last year. It noted that the pace at which people are becoming displaced remains very high. The UN Refugee Agency notes: “On average, 20 people were driven from their homes every minute last year or one every three seconds – less than the time it takes to read this sentence.”

This event also celebrates the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (Oct. 24, 1945). Today, as at its founding, the United Nations is working to provide peaceful alternatives to violence, to shelter refugees and to improve the quality of life for people all over the world. It’s a formidable job, made even more difficult by attempts by some political leaders, both domestically and globally, to discredit United Nations programs.
