Peace Day Block Party!

You and your family are invited to celebrate the UN International Day of Peace and Campaign Nonviolence Week of Direct Actions at the Peace Day Block Party, Saturday, Sept. 23 from 3-7pm at the Albuquerque Center for Peace & Justice, on Silver between Harvard and Cornell (we are closing down Silver from the corner to the alley). This year’s theme is “Together: Safety, Respect & Dignity for All,” and everyone is welcome! There will be music, poetry,dances, food trucks, social justice tables and more. Confirmed live music performers include Medicine Drum Circle, NM Peace Choir, and Eileen & the In-Betweens; poets Hakim Bellamy, Manuel Gonzalez and his daughter Sarita, Aztatl, and Nikki Archuleta; plus face painting by Sarina, an interactive Peace Tree by Peaches & Kyle, and kids drumming with Abram/Nyol.

     The theme this year for UN International Day of Peace is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety & Dignity For All.” This theme will be celebrated by thousands of people all over the world including in Albuquerque. Sponsoring groups are the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, Albuquerque Chapter of the United Nations Association, Power Through Peace, Campaign Nonviolence New Mexico, UNM Peace Studies Program, and the New Mexico Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Justice.This is a community event to foster conversations about peace and an opportunity to build community and for neighbors to get to know each other better.

     The City of Albuquerque will likely be declaring Sept. 21 International Day of Peace with a proclamation on Sept. 6th. And if you are an educator and want to help your students explore the theme of TOGETHER for Peace – Respect, Safety and Dignity for All, you can get some ideas and resources for lessons and activities and share your students’ work by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
