Eleventh Annual Peace Day - Commemorating the 65th year since the bombing of Hiroshima
- 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM - Peace Crane folding and peace stories at the Golden Acorn Summer Camp located at Monte del Sol Charter School (4158 Walking Rain Road - Santa Fe). Ages 5-11. Peace and sustainability activities all day.
- At 4:45 - 7:00 PM - you are invited to the Annual Hiroshima Peace Bell Ceremony at the Tree of Peace, South Lawn of the Capitol Round House and if you like to contribute with words, music, a song, a prayer - or in any way you see fit to help empower this global prayer for World Peace.
- At 5:15 PM - (New Mexico time) on Thursday, August 5th, 2010 we will ring a bell for peace together with the people of Hiroshima, Japan who ring the Peace Bell in Peace Park at this same moment in world time - 8:15 AM, August 6th. Each year, many thousands of citizens gather in Hiroshima Peace Park to remember the moment of the horrifying detonation of the atomic bomb over their city and share a fervent prayer for World Peace. The Peace Bell is rung. White doves are released to carry the prayer of peace to the heavens. Sirens blast signaling the moment to observe silence and prayer citywide. The Japanese remember this as the time when they painfully recognized that the human relationship to war must change or human life on Earth would perish.
On Peace Day 2006, we planted a Tree of Peace on the south lawn of the Capitol in Santa Fe. This year we will continue the Annual Peace Bell practice there to hold the faith that the human species is fully capable of evolving - of transforming war into peace - hatred into compassion - fear into love - and of living in balance with the natural world. Presented by Golden Acorns Summer Camp and the Cranes for Peace Project. Information: 505-795-9079 and 505-577-0377.

More Plutonium Destined for WIPP? Public "scoping" meeting presented by Department of Energy (DOE) in order for the public to tell DOE what to include in a draft environmental impact statement. The draft statement might be published in 2011 and released for public review, comment and hearings. This meeting takes place at the Best Western Stevens Inn (Carlsbad). Activists agree that the scope of the new statement must address whether the plutonium will fit into WIPP, which has a capacity for about seven metric tons. Further, it must address why the plutonium should be transported again. Much of the six metric tons was already shipped from the DOE sites at Hanford, Livermore, and Los Alamos to the Savannah River Site. DOE claims that the waste is similar to that at WIPP. Activists question why the plutonium was not shipped directly to WIPP in the first place. Information: http://www.spdsupplementaleis.com .
