Fourth of July parade in Jemez. Veterans for Peace invites you to join them at their float. VFP will also table at the fair that follows the parade. We stage in the field north of the Jemez Springs Post Office at mile marker 17. We need VFP members and friends to walk with the float. Please contact crp66@juno.com to let VFP know whether you will walk or need to ride on the float.

Fundraiser for Guatemalan communities severely affected by recent Tropical Storm Agatha, which killed over 150 people and displaced thousands. Most of the destruction centered in areas of poor indigenous campesino communities that experienced mudslides, loss of communication, and destruction of water systems and roads. Join us for music and silent auction; community potluck of rice and beans and whatever you bring. Cosponsored by Albuquerque Center for Peace and Central America Solidarity Network. A public forum on the Arizona racial profiling law is ttaking place at at the UNM Law School (Albuquerque). We will be speaking about our recent travel advisory that we issued for New Mexicans traveling to AZ, and our lawsuit we have filed challenging the law. IFCO-Pastors for Peace 21st Friendship Caravan to Cuba will stop at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice (202 Harvard SE - Albuquerque). A program featuring a short video about the Caravan and discussion about Cuba will be presented by the Caranvanistas. The Caravan has been going to Cuba as a "travel challenge" for 21 years seeking an end to the Blockade of Cuba and the Right of American Citizens to travel freely. Every year they have taken tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba and the public is invited to bring donations of money and over-the-counter medicine, and medical equipment in support of this effort to support peace and justice. A report on the successful action blocking the unloading of an Israeli ship in Oakland Port, CA on June 20 will be presented by Richard Becker. The action, in the sixth largest port in the United States, was the first of several protests and work stoppages planned around the world, including Norway, Sweden and South Africa. Friday-Saturday, July 16-17

A statewide gathering in Tularosa in support and remembrance of those who were exposed to the radiation released from the dropping of the first atomic bomb at the Trinity Test, near Socorro. These events have been organized by the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium and Las Mujeres Hablan. On Friday, July 16, the Consortium will hold a candlelight vigil from 8 to 10 pm for those who have lost loved ones to cancer or are cancer survivors. On Saturday, July 17, the Consortium and Las Mujeres Hablan will hold an all day community gathering at the Tularosa Community Center, beginning at 9 am. Participants will have the opportunity to share their memories of the Trinity Test. They will learn also about the proposed amendments to the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, which would cover those exposed to radiation from the Trinity Test (http://tomudall.senate.gov/?p=video&id=484 ).In addition, they will learn about the Los Alamos Historical Document Retrieval and Assessment Project, which documents the Trinity Test (http://www.lahdra.org ).

Dialogue: This is the month in which we celebrate Independence Day. What does independence mean to you? Listening openly to each person's point of view helps us understand the complexity of the local and global issues that we face. Through this practice we learn to work together as we reach for peace and justice. Dialogue has moved to an afternoon time and hope you can join. Information: 505-243-6174.

"From Violence to Safety" is the title of a talk about the early warning signs of abuse, the many services for domestic violence victims and for abusers that Haven House offers, and what you can do to help. The event is free, and all are welcome. The presentation is part of the Westside Forum talks and is taking place at Unitarian Universalist Westside Congregation (1650 Abrazo Road - Rio Rancho).

Celebrate the publication of Singing Out! An Oral History of America's Folk Revivals. Join the book's authors, KUNM Folk Route's DJ David Dunaway and recent UNM MFA graduate Molly Beers as they play archival interviews and recount stories from the likes of Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Holly Near, Mary Travers and other pivotal figures in the American folk movement. David King Dunaway is a UNM professor of English and professor of broadcasting at San Francisco State University.He wrote a book about Pete Seeger, "How Can I Keep from Singing". The Third Annual Society of Educating Women Conference focuses on the shared commitment of academics and activists to advance education, learning, and social justice for girls and women with an emphasis on promoting activism in New Mexico. Vigil for Immigration Reform against Arizona's Law SB1070 at First Congregational UCC (corner of Girard and Lomas - Albuquerque). Sponsored by Albuquerque faith groups. July 29, 2010 is the date that Arizona's law will go into effect, which has local law enforcement checking immigration status. The law has been condemned by faith groups around the world. The law has also been challenged by the US Dept of Justice, ACLU, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Tucson police officer Martin Escobar, and the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders. Annual Hiroshima Commemoration is being held by Pax Christi NM on Friday, July 30 in Santa Fe and Saturday, July 31 in Santa Fe and Los Alamos. This year's theme is: "65 Years is Enough! Retire the Bomb!" The president of Pax Christi USA and auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, Bishop Gabino Zavala, will speak about the need for nuclear abolition on Friday, July 30 at El Museo Cultural (1615 Paseo de Peralta - Santa Fe) beginning at 7:30 pm.

A Disarmament Summer Encampment in Northern New Mexico for youth around the country is being sponsored by Think Outside the Bomb, the nation's largest antinuclear network. On August 6, we will commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a mass procession and creative nonviolent civil disobedience, all are welcome to come up to Los Alamos and help us say 'no to the bomb.' They will also be organizing lots of creative strategic actions leading up to August 6 - focused on preventing the expansion of Los Alamos and the efforts to begin uranium mining again!
