Tuesday, December 1, 1:00pm

Rally for Social Justice at City Hall (downtown - Albuquerque) on the day Richard Berry takes the oath of office to draw attention to inequality and oppression. Food Not Bombs will be sharing a free meal. We want a welcoming Albuquerque, which means an end to police violence, hunger, and homelessness. We'll meet at 4th and Marquette at 1:00pm to set up a table within the plaza. Please join us for this important event.

Tuesday, December 1, 6:00pm

Emergency Protest: End Colonialism! U.S./Nato Out of Afghanistan Now!. Take to the Streets to Stop the War! People across the nation are going out tonight as President Obama announces his escalation of the war in Afghanistan. In Albuquerque the Iraq Vets Against the War and Stop the War Machine are calling for people to gather at the Galleria Plaza (corner of Second and Copper Street NW - Albuquerque) to listen to the president's speech and protest the escalation. We are gathering here to send a message to the whole Congressional Delegation that we want them to oppose this war escalation and to work for other solutions like the freedom of Gaza. Candlelight Walk & Blessing for those who will be addressing climate change in Copenhagen Dec 7-18. Begins at Civic Plaza (downtown - Albuquerque) and proceeds 4 blocks to St John Episcopal Church (318 Silver SE - Albuquerque) for an interfaith prayer vigil. Bring your own candle. Annual Legislative Preview will look at upcoming health care and related issues for New Mexico's 2010 Legislative session. An additional feature of this year's event will be a look at federal health care reform and its impact on New Mexico. Speakers: Jessica Perez from US Senator Bingman's Office, NM State Senator Dede Feldman, and NM State Representative Danice Picraux. There may be additional speakers. Opening reception for Beauty and the Streets, an installation that captures the diversity of ArtStreet community artists and their work through a variety of media. This program of Abq. Health Care for the Homeless builds community and increases awareness of issues of homelessness through the art making process. The exhibit runs through January 31 at the Lobo Theatre (3013 Central NE - Albuquerque). Gallery hours are Sundays from 9am-1pm & 7-9pm. Information: 505-248-0817.

Candlelight Vigil in Nob Hill to Honor Those Who Die From Lack of Health Care (45,000 Americans die every year to due to lack of health care and 50 million Americans are without health insurance) - Gather at the parking lot on Silver behind La Montanita grocery store (Central Avenue and Carlisle Boulevard SE - Albuquerque). at 5:30pm. Head south on Carlisle Boulevard towards Silver Avenue. Take the first right onto Silver Avenue, parking lot is on the right. This event will coincide with the 15th Annual Nob Hill Holiday Shop and Stroll, but is not intended to interfere in any way with that event. Please bring a small candle and flashlight in case the weather does not permit the candles from staying lighted. It will be a quiet vigil, without arguments or debates. Please do not get drawn into any arguments or debates while the vigil is taking place and do not obstruct those participating in the holiday stroll. People Before Profit Film & Lecture Series presents Venezuela Bolivariana: People and Struggle of the Fourth World War, which examines the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela as connected to the worldwide movement against capitalist globalization. This revolution, thanks to its incredible grassroots and networking power, transcends the national frontier of Venezuela and contributes with concrete alternatives to the fight against neoliberal capitalism. In Spanish, with English subtitles. Guest Speaker: Carolina Reyes, grassroots activist just returned from Venezuela.

[Stones into Schools cover] Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, not Bombs in Afghanistan and Pakistan author, Greg Mortenson, talks about his new book at UNM's SUB Ballroom (Albuquerque). Also, he shares his broader vision to promote peace through education and literacy, as well as touching on military matters, Islam, and women. Tuesday, December 8

A public hearing about the adequacy of the state's water quality standards will be held by the New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission. The hearing, starting December 8, will take place in Room 309 of the Roundhouse (State Capitol - Santa Fe) and could last several weeks. During the first week of the hearing, public comment will be heard after lunch. It is suggested that people arrive around 12:30pm. Public comment will also be heard the evening of Wednesday, December 9, beginning at 6:30pm at the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources office (1220 South St. Francis Drive - Santa Fe). The federal Clean Water Act requires each state to review the adequacy of their water quality standards at least once every three years. Thus, the title of the hearing is the Triennial Review. 2009 Albuquerque Homeless Persons' Memorial Vigil - Join communities across the nation as we remember those who passed away in 2009 while experiencing homelessness. 12:00pm - 1:00pm - Gather at the Memorial Wall at Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless. Casa Los Arboles staff and residents will be serving green chile stew beginning at noon. There will be a short ceremony at 12:45pm. 1:00pm - Begin march to First United Methodist Church. 2:00pm - 3:30pm - Memorial Vigil at First United Methodist Church (4th and Lead SW - Albuquerque). Join clergy and laypeople from congregations around Albuquerque/Santa Fe for a Las Posadas vigil to the Department of Homeland Security, where ICE holds immigrants in temporary detention. Meet at the corner of Renard Place SE and Buena Vista SE (near airport - Albuquerque). Light candles and proceed to the Dept of Homeland Security. We will sing Las Posadas songs and hear statements on immigration from a faith perspective from several local religious leaders. This vigil is part of a national Las Posadas journey occurring from the West Coast to the White House from Dec. 10-18, 2009. Information: 505-842-7343 (Albuquerque).
