Leonard Peltier's first parole hearing in 15 years will be 28 July 2009. Letters submitted to the U.S. Parole Commission on Leonard's behalf need to be received by the date 14 July 2009. Letters to President Obama will be helpful in conjunction with petitioning the parole commission. These need to be received by the White House in advance of the parole hearing. The 30th Anniversary Commemoration of the Church Rock Uranium Tailings Spill (This spill released significantly more radiation into the environment than the better knownThree Mile Island accident). The daylong commemoration begins with a prayer walk along State Road 566 from Red Water Pond Road (Church Rock) to the site of the spill across from the United Nuclear Corporation uranium mill. Prayers for healing will be offered at the beginning of the walk and at the spill site. The walk will end at the ranch of Larry J. King, where a press conference reaffirming the Navajo Nation's ban on uranium mining will be held. A luncheon and a film showing with a panel discussion will follow the press conference. Real Life In Afghanistan and Pakistan: Personal Stories And Comments Civilian And Military is being presented by the Albuquerque Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA. It's an opportunity to hear from New Mexicans who have lived in and worked in Afghanistan and Pakistan and Central Asia. They will tell of their experiences and their views of the background of the current conflicts and of the present policies. NMED Public Meeting about LANL Draft Hazardous Waste Permit at the Ohkay Casino Conference Center, (two miles north of Espanola on Highway 68). The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) intends to issue a hazardous waste permit to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to store and treat hazardous waste and to close hazardous waste disposal units in accordance with the New Mexico Hazardous Waste Act.
