Free Theater Workshops with Somos Los Otros - Beginning in February at the P&J, we will create skits, plays, and songs around the issues of immigration and solidarity. Legislative Day for People of Faith - concerned about global warming and sustainability in New Mexico - Join other people of faith with ecological concerns to learn about bills in the 2009 NM Legislative Session needing support (i.e., funding for low income household energy efficiency measures, green careers, renewable energy and others). The day includes: prayer, briefing on bills, committee hearings and visits to legislators. During the session you will become part of the solution through the network action and connections that are made. Suggested donation: $15 required with pre-registration by Jan. 29. Lunch included. The New Mexico Environment Department's State Water Quality Board (NMED/SWQB) is holding two pre-study meetings with the public to get input on water quality issues and concerns, study design, and implementation for the Upper Rio Grande and its tributaries (except the Chama). This one takes place in Espanola. The results of the survey will be used to determine the status of water quality within the watershed, track water quality improvements and identify impaired water bodies. If Upper Rio Grande water is a concern of yours, be sure to attend this meeting. The second meeting is being held on February 4 in Taos (see below). A brainstorming session for a Transition Town Meeting to help determine how Santa Fe might lessen its dependence on oil. This effort is based on the international Transition Town movement taking place around the world (a beginning reference about the movement is The Transition Handbook: From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience by Rob Hopkins). It's taking place at the Santa Fe Co-op (913 W. Alameda - Santa Fe). Co-sponsors: the Sustainable Santa Fe Commission and La Montañita Co-op. All are welcome to attend.

People Before Profit Film Series presents Sicko!. Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Moore sets out to investigate the American healthcare system. Sticking to his tried-and-true, one-man approach, Moore sheds light on the complicated medical affairs of individuals and local communities. The U.S. health-care industry is a juicy target, and Moore casts a shocking light on some of the people it's failed. Julia Deupree from NM's Healthcare for America Now (HCAN) will speak after the film.

"Comienzos - New Beginnings" is a local, independent documentary showing at the Guild Theater. This is a fundraiser for Comienzos, a nonprofit organization offering classes in non-violent communication, t'ai chi and yoga for inmates in Albuquerque's west side jail.

Singing down the walls: bringing our communities together through music is an invitation to join us to learn and sing our common history. Every month, local and visiting musicians will teach songs and we will continue with a community sing-along. Community Radio Project celebrationand planning for our continued success. In late 2007, you, P&J community, supported Available Media's efforts to apply for 5 full-power FM radio licenses. To date, we have been awarded 2: one in Gallup and one in Grants, NM. We were turned down for one, and two are still pending, including one with service to Albuquerque. Celebrate grassroots media with live music, dancing, an enchilada dinner, and good company at the Channel 27 studio (415 Tijeras NW - the old county courthouse, on Civic Plaza - Albuquerque). A press conference is scheduled in the Capitol Rotunda (Santa Fe) to Bring the NM Guard Home from Iraq. Let's fill the Rotunda and let our legislators and Governor Richardson know that we want our Guard home now, not in 18 months or 2 years. There are over 800 deployments scheduled for 2009, at least 360 of whom are going to Iraq. For more details, please check the article on our Welcome page.

An in depth presentation and workshop on a possible roadmap to an environmentally friendly and sustainable energy supply is being presented by Dr. Arjun Makhijani, President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER). This takes place in the 4th Floor Hearing Room of the P.E.R.A. Building (1120 Paseo de Peralta - Santa Fe). Dr. Makhijani will outline scientific studies that conclude slowing global warming will require an end to carbon emissions within the next few decades. He will lay out his plan for how the United States can end its reliance on fossil fuels without sacrificing economic growth and without taking on what he believes to be the risks of nuclear power. Makhijani will also discuss how the US can lead the world to a fully renewable, efficient energy economy, which he feels can be achieved in the next 30 to 50 years. People Before Profit Film Series presents Current realities in Guatemala. which highlights mining, mega-projects and of bio-fuels by transnational corporations; advances and setbacks in the struggle for justice in a country known for ongoing impunity; threats to activists; the role of human rights accompaniers. We will show clips of two films, "No a la mineria - Sipakapa no se vende" y "No todo lo que brilla es oro", show opposition efforts by Guatemalan indigenous campesinos to international gold/silver mining operations that compromise their livelihood, environment, and future. Discussion and update will follow with local activist Renee Wolters, back from doing human rights work in Guatemala.

A short overview about the kind of work being accomplished at the New Mexico Asian Family Center will be presented by Rinita Mazumdar, Ph.D, Outreach Specialist for the Center. She will discuss historically relevant issues about European colonization in Asia; different religious and ethnic groups in Asia; their Asian family patterns, class, and gender relationship; how European colonization affected various Asian societies differently; economic crisis; migration to the U.S.; and changes in Asian families within the United States.
