['A Community Event to Protect Our Health, Children, and Water from the Nuclear Weapons Complex'] "A Community Event to Protect Our Health, Children, and Water from the Nuclear Weapons Complex", a forum on New Mexico at risk from expanded pit (bomb) production - the threat to New Mexico's residents and natural resources posed by the Department of Energy's recent proposal for the "transformation" of its nuclear weapons complex.

The forum will begin with a press conference at 10 am with Picuris Pueblo Governor Craig Quanchello; Santa Fe Mayor David Coss, who is a Mayor for Peace; Espanola Mayor James Maestas; Allen Sanchez, the Executive Director of the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops; and others. Afterwards, presentations will be made about public health and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons activities at both of NM's DOE facilities - Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories.

EPA public hearing regarding the draft LANL permit to address the flows through the canyon systems at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to the Rio Grande. It's being held at the Best Western Hilltop House (Los Alamos), beginning at 6pm with a public information meeting. The hearing will begin at 7pm.

Note for Albuquerque: The LANL flows into the Rio Grande concern us as we switch our drinking water source to the Rio Grande (in the near future).

Join us at the University Honors Forum for a special lecture and book signing with Diane Wilson, author of An Unreasonable Woman. Ms. Wilson will tell the story of how one woman's fight for justice battling corporate toxic polluters transformed her from a shrimper to a leading advocate of women's rights, prison reform, and peace. "En Vieques la lucha continúa: The success of a grassroots campaign against U.S. militarization and the challenges of community development in its aftermath", a talk about the success of a grassroots campaign for the demilitarization of the island of Vieques (For more than 60 years, the U.S. Navy used a 900-acre firing range on the island - off the coast of Puerto Rico - for bombing exercises.) and the challenges of community development in its aftermath. The talk will be presented by Puerto Rican activist and community organizer from the island of Vieques, Nestor de Jesús Guishard. It takes place in Room 335 of Ortega Hall (UNM - Albuquerque). People before Profit film, Soldiers of Conscience: 4 Soldiers. Their country asked them to kill. Their hearts asked them to stop., takes a realistic yet optimistic look at war, peace, and the power of the human conscience. There will be a short talk (following the film) by local soldier of conscience, Elliot Lozano. Celebration of International Women's Day with speaker Diana Enright, (anthropologist, storyteller, magician, actor, teacher, and graduate researcher on women in medicine shows) at UNM. The medicine show era (1800-1940) offered a unique blend of oratory, theatre and marketing in a time when doctors were rare and medical practices painfully barbaric. With her Victorian sensibilities, business acumen and flair for drawing a crowd, Violet McNeal was one of the few women in the business. As "Princess Lotus Blossom", she sold an astonishing array of cures; as Violet, hers was a dynamic voice in the "advertising as entertainment" style of marketing that prevails today. Report back from Chiapas, Mexico on the Zapatista Women's Encuentro, and the Women to Women's Project addressing health care and midwifery in autonomous communities in Chiapas.

Local activist Lucy Grinnell will give a report on the Zapatista women's meeting in Chiapas and Lisa Sanderson-Fox will talk about her project, Women to Women, and share her experiences working with Zapatista women as they take charge of their own health care. The short film, The Life of Women in Resistance, showing the daily lives of Zapatista women, will be screened. We will also hear about local projects such as Enlace Comunitario which serves Spanish speaking survivors of domestic violence.

People before Profit film, An Act of Conscience, standing up for your beliefs begins at home. How far are you willing to stand up for your deepest beliefs? This documentary chronicles Randy Kehler and Betsy Corner of Colrain, MA, whose commitment to pacifism led them to risk losing their home. After 14 years of refusal to pay federal taxes as a protest against war and military spending, their home was seized by U.S. marshals and IRS agents. For 5 years the couple nonviolently resisted the home seizure. Film offers a glimpse of the conflict between reaching for the American dream and challenging the very foundation of that dream. Benefit for Homeless Veterans, Benefit CD and presentation on this nation's epidemic of Homeless Veterans, introducing the song You Have Forgotten Me, written to draw attention to the ever growing epidemic of homeless veterans. You are invited to the 15th annual César Chávez commemoration event, with the theme of "Celebrating the Past, Continuing the Struggle". The day begins with a service learning project, including planting seeds and working the land, at the Sanchez Farm (Lopez and Arenal SW - Albuquerque) from 9-11am. We will then march from the Sanchez Farm to the National Hispanic Cultural Center (Albuquerque) where there will be live music, speakers and cultural performances from noon to 3pm. A Town Hall Meeting with NM State Senator (District 12) Jerry Ortiz y Pino (and possibly additional guests and elected officials). The topic is Local and Economic Issues . It takes place at South Valley Economic Development Center (318 Isleta Boulevard SW - Albuquerque). This is the first of 4 town hall meetings taking place in March and April.
