The service will include area clergy, the NM Gay Women's Chorus and the stories of people who are living with HIV and AIDS. "The 99th Monkey", a new original play, is being presented at the Cell Theatre (700 1st Street NW - Albuquerque). The play, by Paul Adamian, in two acts, is set in the early months of 2003 prior to the Iraq War, and revolves around a high school history teacher and veteran of the Gulf War's decision to join a global protest against the war, revealing the ex-soldier's search for redemption and forgiveness.

A free lecture and book signing for Manifest Destinies - The Making of the Mexican American Race by Laura E. Gómez takes place in Salón Ortega at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 4th Street SW - Albuquerque). Using the territory that is now New Mexico as a case study, Manifest Destinies traces the origins of Mexican Americans as a racial group in the United States, paying particular attention to shifting meanings of race and law in the nineteenth century. Laura Gómez was born in Roswell and raised in Albuquerque. She is currently on the faculty of the University of New Mexico in the Law School and in the Department of American Studies. People before Profit Film/ Lecture Series presents View From a Grain of Sand (2006, 82 minutes), a documentary by Meena Nanji & Ecesis Films Inc., shot over the last three years in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The film depicts a journey through the last 30 years of Afghanistan's history as lived by three Afghan women. A doctor, a teacher and a social activist tell how their lives were violently affected by international wars and regime changes in Afghanistan. Yet through all their loss, and the destruction of their homes and country, these women have endured. With courage, conviction and hope they continue to work on improving the lives of the people around them, against all odds, in this brutalized and divided nation. The event is designed to help the public and non-profit organizations communicate more effectively with their legislators. The workshop will cover the lobbying process in general and will not address specific issues. Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino (D) and Representative Larry Larrañaga (R) will discuss lobbying from the legislator's perspective. There will also be a presentation on "Lobbying at Home and on the Internet." The workshop costs $10 for nonmembers of the League and reservations are required as space is limited. Reception for Art Auction of Works by Thora Guinn: a benefit for the Peace Center. The works are on exhibit at the Center until the reception. If you find pieces that appeal to you, please make your bids at any time on the sheets posted. There is no minimum bid - the highest bid wins. Thora Guinn has made art for over twenty years. She is a founding member of Rainbow Artists, a Women's Art Collective formed in 1990. Her work is mostly watercolor with some works in colored pencil and collage. The pieces she is donating reflect strong feelings and her sense of humor. She has been a Peace Center member since 1983, when Dorie Bunting and Blanche Fitzpatrick founded it. The 1st Christmas for new refugees children/youth is hosted by and takes place at the Harwood Art Center (Albuquerque), Tutoring at Bambanani Village(TABV) in honor of the esl students, their families, and volunteer tutors.
The community is invited to be part of this festivity which is meant, among other things, to ease the loneliness, and help the immigrants enjoy the spirit of the season. The variety of languages and the abundance of ethnic foods will give this event the "air of a "mini united nations".
This party will feature ethnic cuisine - all you can eat, presentation of cultural music and dances by new immigrants and local artists, and cultural exchange. Admission is free. Human Rights Accompaniment in Guatemala is the subject of a short film, talk about the work and about how you can become involved. Join us for an alternative experience, and learn about an ongoing human rights project. Renee Wolters, a local activist, will be working with the Guatemala Accompaniment Project as a human rights accompanier for survivors who have testified in the genocide cases (massacres in the 80's). The strategy of this project is to have an international presence and moral support for those at risk of threats and attacks. Advocacy and education of the issues connect the global north.
